An interview with Howard Hodgkin, in theEYE series from Illuminations: "You need things to look at," he says, "things to affect your feelings, and your intelligence, and your heart." The film features the exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2001, when Hodgkin's paintings were hung amid the gallery's Old Masters.

State Of The Art: Ideas And Images in the 1980s
State of the Art was a remarkable, authoritative and challenging series of documentaries about the visual arts in the 1980s, made by Sandy Nairne for Channel 4 and Illuminations. Other artists featured include Joseph Beuys, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Hans Haacke and Eric Fischl. The film about Hodgkin includes a conversation and a sequence filmed in his exhibition of paintings at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1985.
